Man Loses Social Security, Medicare After Being Declared Dead

A Seattle man was declared dead by the Social Security Administration (SSA) and subsequently lost access to his Social Security and Medicare benefits.
While President Donald Trump’s newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has made headlines for its efforts to reduce Social Security fraud and publicized what appears to be a high number of allegedly dead recipients still receiving benefits, Ned Johnson was actually mistakenly declared dead.
Why It Matters
Elon Musk, a Tesla executive and the head of DOGE, has centered some of the new department’s cost-cutting around Social Security fraud. Musk published a spreadsheet last month that he said showed millions of dead people still earning monthly Social Security payments.
During a White House meeting with Trump in February, Musk said that a “cursory examination of Social Security” showed that payments were being sent to people “that are 150 years old.”
Roughly 73 million Americans rely on Social Security every month.
